That said, it means I'm working every day at honing my craft (except on Sunday). As a songwriter, I enjoy listening to people, their conversations, what I notice they're NOT saying, topics that come up during the day, and all sort of other things that might be useful in getting the right word in the right place and -- the biggest challenge -- eliminating everything that is unnecessary.
In a great song, there are no extra words. The elegance and beauty of a great song is when you can't take away anything else -- a paraphrase of Antoine Saint-Exupery's quote. Ruthless editing is required, and it's my new mantra.
Do you have a songwriting goal for the New Year -- or any other time? Be sure you write -- not type on the computer -- your goals. The simple act of writing your goals gives you something like an 80% or more chance of achieving them than if you don't. So write goals as well as songs, and watch your life blossom!
