- Visit the venue to check sound, electricity and outlets, and possible places to set up (if not already marked). Is there enough space for the keyboard, speakers, amps, and so forth?
- Rehearse all the pieces to be performed. Create sets or themes or some way to have pieces flow artistically. Make a program or list to keep for my records (I keep a history of all my performances).
- Test all instruments and equipment and make sure all the cables and power supplies are marked for where they go and what they power up.
- Include a grounded 100' extension cord, power strip, and duct tape for safety in your gig bag, along with copy of program and any music needed.
- Check costume/ballgown/outfit to be sure all the buttons are there, all seams are intact, no loose threads can catch on something, and that you'll look good in it and can still move around comfortably. Polish shoes or boots if needed. Be sure all accessories are clean and ready to wear.
- Allow extra time to park the car when you get there, carry things (or have a roadie help), find the elevator, and thoroughly set up before people arrive.
- Bring business cards, copy of invoice or contract or other paperwork. It may not be appropriate to bring merchandise, depending on the gig.
- Remember your music is a gift. Be generous and happy!
If you have other routines or things you normally do before a gig that I've left out, please comment to let the rest of us know. Have a great week, everyone!
